Kerry G. Oslund, Schurz Communications, Sr. Vice President Publishing Emerging Media

Kerry Oslund.11On April 30th, 2014 Kerry Oslund was named Senior Vice President Publishing and Emerging Media for Schurz Communications.

Early that same month, at the National of Association of Broadcasters convention, Broadcasting & Cable Magazine honored Kerry with its Annual Technology Leadership Award.  In its June 24th, 2013 edition, the same publication featured Kerry on its cover, as one of the industry’s “Next Wave of Leaders.”

Prior to joining Schurz Communications, in October 2008, as Vice President of Digital, Kerry was VP of New Media for Gannett Broadcasting, in Washington, DC. In that role, he focused on new opportunities in information delivery and business development on emerging platforms. Kerry was the primary digital liaison between Gannett Broadcasting, USA Today, Gannett US-Community Publishing, Legal and M&A. In 2008, Kerry was honored with the Gannett Chairman Award for past and future digital contributions.

Before joining Gannett’s corporate team in 2002, he served as that company’s News Director at WXIA-TV, in Atlanta. Prior to that, Kerry was Corporate News Director for Lee Enterprises, with oversight responsibilities for seven network affiliate TV stations, as well as News Director responsibilities for Lee’s flagship, KOIN-TV, in Portland, Oregon.

While attending Arizona State University, Kerry worked as a local newscast producer for the CBS affiliate, in Phoenix, joining that station full-time after graduating with a journalism degree, in 1983. From there, he held Producer and Executive Producer assignments for Gannett, in Atlanta. He also served as Supervising Producer and Lead Writer for the nationally syndicated news magazine, “USA Today on TV,” from Grant Tinker/Gannett (GTG), in Washington, DC.

From 1990-1994, Kerry worked in Los Angeles as an Executive Producer for the Walt Disney Company. He helped create, then supervise, KCAL TV’s “Prime 9 News,” the first prime-time, all-local, news block in a major market. In 1995, Kerry joined other former Disney-KCAL executives in advancing newly created Argyle Television (sold to New World), then Argyle II (merged with Hearst).

Among other journalism and technology awards, he has six Emmys, a Golden Microphone and the National Association of Black Journalists highest award for International Coverage (network and top 15 markets) for his work in Somalia.

Kerry is IAB Digital Media Sales Certified. He has attended the Center for Creative Leadership, IDEO Innovation Training, Innosight Strategic Innovation Training. He has led digital design and innovation challenges at both Schurz, Gannett and at various universities.

Kerry is currently engaged in advanced studies in data sciences and analytics.  Kerry is the co-inventor of a patent pending, advanced, newspaper rack-display system.

At Schurz, Kerry leads the corporate digital team with revenue, audience, inventory, engineering and design directors based across the USA. He is additionally involved in strategic planning, M&A and budgeting activities in all company segments. Kerry is part the Schurz Acquisition Committee and adds Benefit Committee duties with his new assignment as SVP.

Kerry shares four children with his wife Mary Ann.
